Shopping goddess

I have been having a great day. P and J left this morning for their own holiday so I have had the house (and the computer) all to myself, yay! So the day has been very domestic other than an extended shopping trip. Laundry, packing, downloading photos, finding fresh batteries for the camera, charging the ipod. All because I leave for London in the morning.

So, I am supposed to be touristing? well, instead today I decided to do all those bits of shopping that I have been collecting up saying- I really must get that before I go. A delightful whirlwind later I got all on the list except one. There is a Scottish painter that I have decided is fantastic. Sir James Guthrie. One of those cases where I keep saying to myself "that painting is fabulous" and it turns out to be another Guthrie. Frustratingly, no one in Edinburgh, including the National Gallery, seems to stock any books about him or prints of his work. I shall have to search the internet later.

*      op shopping. the cheapest cashmere jumper# I have found new is £60 and I didn't like them. So I have bought some second hand. Cheaper and nicer styling than the low end new ones.The charity shops here really are pretty fab. Oh, some of this came from a fgreat vintage clothing store. Just like opshopping only more expensive (and a greater concentration of good stuff.
**    yes I do like sewing from scraps! and this stuff is the equivalent of $80/m, woven in Edinburgh.
***   I have previously said I would not hang anything in my house that was not original art. Bother that. I have found three prints that I want to look at. They are not the sort of stuff that you see in every print gallery. Besides, there is still rather too much bare white wall at my place for my liking. These will help that.
#   I sure hope I don't find cashmere too warm to wear at home! I have always wanted some but I have stopped buying thick angora or mohair jumpers because I overheat in them. These are pretty thin at least.

I have pretty much resigned myself to needing another bag to come home. Hope I can make that work. It would be worth excess baggage charges.

You might want to consider making a package and posting your excess stuff home. When I was in London in 2001 they wanted 100 pounds for the extra bag. Really. I managed to get it on another flight as freight for about 40 pounds as the post office was shut. It was a bit of a shock.

Yes, thanks. I checked and an extra bag in the hold is 65pounds. all is not yet lost as I am allowed two carry on bags and I can fit lots more in my suitcase than I brought over. I must be a bit more careful from here though about the volume of aquisitions. Thankfully nothing I have aquired is particularly heavy or fragile.

yup... I second that one... better ring your airline or hop on the net and find out how much extra baggage is. some of them charge by the kilo and it can be very $$$, and it does vary from airline to airline. I sent a number of boxes home in a few places around Europe instead. in the UK it was about 30 pounds for quite a heavy medium-sized box (lots of books and museum brochures).

and waiting a few weeks for your lovely stuff (yes, I am jealous, heh) will be like getting a box full of pressies!
