Rose coughed in her sleep last night too. She coughed so hard it sounded like she was choking and she stayed asleep through it.
She stopped after I lay her head down in my lap (at about 45degrees) and patted her back, hard and continuously for about 5 min. She coughed more while I did it (and stayed asleep!) but didn't cough again all night.
I think it's called postural drainage and I can sort of do it to myself by lying head down for a while, but the back patting is very nice and motivates you to stay there for long enough.
